  • Heath Freeman

    Chairman of the Board

    Chairman of the Board of Fred’s, Heath Freeman is the President and a Founding Member, of Alden Global Capital LLC, a New York-based investment firm focused on deep value, catalyst driven investing. He has been with the firm since its founding in 2007, and has been its President since 2014. Mr. Freeman currently serves as Vice Chairman of MediaNews Group, Inc. (‘MNG”), the second largest newspaper business in the United States by circulation, owning newspapers such as The Denver Post, San Jose Mercury News and Orange County Register. At MNG he leads the strategic review committee and serves on the compensation committee. Mr. Freeman is a co-founder and serves on the board of SLT Group, Inc. a private boutique fitness business founded in 2011. In addition, Mr. Freeman also co-founded City of Saints Coffee Roasters in 2013, a third wave coffee roaster, wholesaler and retailer. Prior to Alden, Mr. Freeman worked as an Investment Analyst at Smith Management, a private investment firm. Mr. Freeman began his career as an analyst at Peter J. Solomon Company, a boutique investment bank with a focus on Retail and Consumer, where he worked on mergers and acquisitions, restructurings and refinancing assignments. Currently, Mr. Freeman serves as Chairman of the Advisory Board for Jewish Life at Duke University's Freeman Center. He is a graduate of Duke University.

    • Timothy A. Barton

      Director
      Tim Barton joins the Board with a substantial business and technology background and with experience in growing successful companies. Mr. Barton founded Freightquote in 1998, growing it into the largest online freight shipping provider in the United States with $600 million in annual revenue. Mr. Barton served as Chairman and CEO until the company’s sale to C.H. Robinson Worldwide in 2015. Prior to founding Freightquote, Mr. Barton was the Co-Founder and President of UWI Association Programs, which grew into Network Long Distance before being acquired by IXC Communications/Broadwing in 1998. 
      • Michael K. Bloom

        Chief Executive Officer and Director
        Michael K. Bloom is Chief Executive Officer of fred's. He joined fred's in January 2015 as President and Chief Operating Officer and was appointed CEO in August 2016. Mr. Bloom previously served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Family Dollar Stores, Inc. He also spent more than 20 years with CVS Corporation, now CVS Health, holding a variety of positions with increasing responsibilities in merchandising, marketing, supply chain and store operations, and rising finally to Executive Vice President of Merchandising, Visual Merchandising, Marketing, Store Brand, Advertising and Supply Chain. Before joining CVS, Mr. Bloom spent 10 years in merchandising and operations management with Virginia-based Peoples Drug Stores and the Florida division of Toronto-based Shoppers Drug Mart Corporation.
        • Peter J. Bocian

          Director
          Peter J. Bocian was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Safeway, Inc. until his retirement in March 2015. Previously, he served as the Executive Vice President and Head of Corporate Services and Finance at JPMorgan Chase & Company from July 2011 to January 2013, as Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of Hewlett-Packard Company from December 2008 to June 2011, and as Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Administrative Officer of Starbucks Corporation from May 2007 to November 2008. Mr. Bocian held a variety of corporate positions, including Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, over a 24-year career at NCR Corporation.
          • Linda Longo-Kazanova

            Director
            Linda Longo-Kazanova, named to the Board in April 2017, served as Chief Human Resources Officer at Keurig Green Mountain, Inc., from 2011 to 2016. Prior to that she was Vice President, Human Resources and Medical at Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation from 2007 to 2010, and as SVP, Human Resources and Business Optimization, at Bell and Howell Company (later known as ProQuest Company) from 2000 to 2007. Ms. Longo-Kazanova also worked at Kraft Foods, Inc. from 1985 to 1995 where she served in a number of positions including global Director, Management and Organization Development. 
            • Michael T. McMillan

              Director
              Michael T. McMillan, named to the Company's Board in February 2007, currently serves as Director of Franchise Development for Pepsi-Cola North America, a Division of PepsiCo, where he has spent the last 22 years in various roles including marketing, sales, franchise development, and general management of its bottling operations.
              • B. Mary McNabb

                Director
                Mary McNabb, named to the Board in April 2005, is the former Chief Executive Officer of Kid's Outlet in California. Ms. McNabb was formerly an executive vice president and director of The Mowbray Group, a California-based retail consulting firm that specializes in problem-solving, cost reductions, importing, and inventory management. Before that, she was executive vice president of merchandising and marketing for Factory 2-U, vice president of sourcing for S-Q of California, and West Coast manager/buyer for One Price Clothing, Inc.
                • Steven B. Rossi

                  Director
                  Steve Rossi brings to the fred's Pharmacy Board extensive financial and operations experience. Mr. Rossi is the Chief Executive Officer of Digital First Media, which has more than 300 print and digital products serving over 45 million Americans each month. He previously served as the company’s Chief Operating Officer. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Rossi held several successive management positions over 19 years with Knight Ridder Inc., including Chief Financial Officer, Senior Vice President of Operations and President of the Newspaper Division.
